African Elephants

Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia.

EOS10D, Sigma 100-300 F4 + 1.4TC, ISO 200,F8 1/500.

Its said that if an Elephant can pass under its mother's belly, then its less than five years old. The smaller of the two here would certainly qualify for that rule, but the other is a young teenager! Together they played in the mud, with one of their favourite tricks being to take a run at the mud puddle, stop suddenly and slide into it. The little one, as often as not, would then fall over with squeals of delight! to be sat on by his pal! - that one will make pic. number 2!

All comments and critiques always welcome and appreciated and thanks for looking.

It sounds like a hoot to watch! Tough light... The one branch in the FG is the only nit.

Thanks for the comments, always much appreciated 8)

It is difficult with the bright sun out there at mid-day and we were hiding in the trees so they couldn't see us. Its always dangerous to be so close to a breeding herd as we were here, with the adults both cows and bulls being very protective of the little ones so we couldn't use flash and give away where we were! We had two very close calls with bull Ele's while we were in Zambia - and I don't mean just 'mock' charges! One chased us at full gallop for several minutes, which to us seemed like an eternity! and it was only thanks to the amazing driving of our guide as we raced through the trees and around the potholes on two wheels, that we escaped!!

It is antics like this that made the elephants one of my favorite animals when I was in Kenya. They are such intelligent, incredible creatures. This is a very cute image and I don't mind the light at all.

This must have been almost as much fun for you to watch as for the elephants to be playing! Thanks for sharing and I'm looking forward to more.

Carol,

Despite the harsh light, this is quite good. Only the OOF brush is a nit. Still images don't convey the awe of such scenes nor the pleasure derived from watching them. I await your next images.
