Congratulations! This is the Image of the Week selection for the Wildlife Gallery, week ending 3rd August, 2012!I was playing around with my images from my recent safari to Mana Pools in Zimbabwe, and quite liked this one.
Those Ana trees are massive...and this regal lion seemed almost insignificant in this forest as he strolled on through.

Techs:
Nikon D3s with Nikkor 500mm f4 VR-II + 1.4xTC @ 700mm
f7.1 @ 1/800 SS @ ISO-1600
Conversion done in Silver Efex

PS: the impala wasn't as close as the telephoto compression makes it seem - though it was fully aware of the lion! :D

Really nice, and not nearly as effective without that back/side lighting providing some separation between the lion and tree. I think the choice to convert it was a good one too.

The impala is a minor distraction, so I guess I wish it had had less courage. ;)

Very interesting and unique perspective, Morkel. Love the way the tree on the left is framing the picture. You can really tell by the comp how tall these trees really are. One person might consider the Impala a distraction, while another may consider it part of the story. I too like the conversion very much and the backlit leaves add quite a bit to the mood.

This is quite lovely Morkel, and shows habitat for a lion most of us wouldn't have expected. The framing is really nice with the tree trunk on the left and the branches filling up the top. Very evocative and interesting image.

What are they looking at :) I don't mind the impala.
Well done on the conversion.

Really nice scene captured here Morkel! I like the conversion here too, and don't mind the inclusion of the impala. Did you do anything with the lion's left eye in post processing?

My only tiny nit is the Impala nose behind the tree but the overall composition with those majestic trees, the view of predator and potential prey and that wonderful light, is lovely! I can hear that sharp snort from the Impala as it senses the presence of danger!
