Congratulations! This is the Image of the Week selection for the Birds Gallery, week ending 8th June, 2012!
Image
5D2 | 22mm | ISO 1250 | F10 | 1/400 | Manual | Wireless remote | Camera covered in camo | Tripod

This Grebe nest was about 20-30 feet away from another Grebe nest. When I first discovered the nests, the Grebes started fighting, and I was lucky to be able to get a few shots. When I first arrived, this nest had two eggs, and I took this shot on the last day, pleased to see 2 more eggs. It was very exciting watching these Grebes constantly get into fights with each other. Some locals said these Grebes have been nesting in this exact spot for a minimum of 9 years, and have become very tolerant.
I observed both Grebes sitting on the nest, and not just the female. When they would leave the nest to either go fishing or fight the other Grebes, I placed my camera by the nest and stood back with my remote. The Grebes would then come back, and get on the nest. Sometimes I'd have to wait a while before they left to fish or fight again to retrieve my camera. this image was taken when the Grebe was getting on the nest and adjusting where she wanted to sit.

Excellent strategy......it worked well. I love the perspective....not something you would expect to see. Well done.

Dude, I'm stunned. And also uber proud of you, even though I had nothing to do with this. Super cool shot Connor! Is there any way to work a lower angle?

thanks Kari! I got some lower angles, and horozontals too. I just didn't like getting all the sky in the lower angles. I just posted this one because of the pose. I should be able to edit some of the others next week. It was super tough to compose without getting any hand of man in the shot. Couldn't shoot it for a two days because there was a camper in the background.

Connor...I really like the use of wide angle on this shot. It really gives it a perspective we are not used to and I really like it! Well done!

Look at those feet! Ok, thats not what makes this image so cool. I agree, the wide angle action gives the image a great look.

Way cool, Connor, and well-executed. My first thought was also for a lower angle but I definitely understood your point about not including too much sky if it was going to detract from the image. Which wireless remote did you use?

Cheers,
Greg
