Where did the term UnSharp Mask come from? I suspect it is a holdover from another form of editing and printing an image. Sort of like the term cc for another copy of a letter or memo. Do today's 14 year olds even know what carbon paper is? Do today's photographers know what a real UnSharp mask is?

From Martin Evening's Adobe Photoshop 7 for Professionals:

The term relates to the retrographic film process whereby a light, soft unsharp negative version of the image was used to increase edge sharpness on the resulting plate.
