I don't use this paper very often, so please forgive my ignorance. Is there a front and back or is the paper the same on both sides? If not, how do you tell one from the other?

Yes there is a front and back. The side to print on is whiter and to my eye has a bit more texture. You may need some very good light to view the difference as it is slight.

I believe mine said on the bag which side was the printable side - but that assumes you haven't removed the paper from the bag.

It is pretty easy to tell in a strong side light (window light?) which is the printable side as there is more texture (also whiter) there than on the base side.
