I am about to spring for a Canon ipf6300 :D which means I need to learn how to mat, mount, and frame. I have been doing lots of research, but I have one question - when using photo mounting corners to attach the print to the foam board, do you just freely stack the mat window on top and only fasten it when sandwiching everything together? Or do you still do a hinge mount to attach the print to the mat window?

I am interested in larger prints, like 16x24 or 20x30.

Thanks!
Brian

Brian,

In our frame shop we tyically don't hinge the mat to the top of the mounting board. Rather we run a stretch of ATG tape around each corner to secure the mat to the backing board. This only works if the backing board is bigger than the print however. Otherwise we would hinge the mat to the board. I can send you an illustration if you want.

A quick note on using photo corners...be sure to leave at least one set of the corners loose and not tight against the print, allowing the print room to move as it expands and contracts. We typically put the bottom corners on tight and then leave a little room on the top as that is how it will end up anyway after gravity kicks in.

Thanks Les. I like the idea of corners for photo-to-backboard and ATG for mat-to-backboard, makes sense.
