Cuban Anole (Anilis equestris)Iguanidae

Pretty secretive an skittish as far as lizards go, This Cuban Anole was photographed as Jill and I were coming out of Miami-Metro Zoo-Wings of Asia exhibit, They can measure up to 16 to 20 inches when fully grown inclusive of tail, pretty temperamental/aggressive and packs a nasty bite if cornered (my personal experience trying to help an injured anole-Never again will I ever pick one up, It left a nasty/deep razor sharp cut in one of my fingers that took a long time to heal, and I had to use a pair of plier to release his jaws from bite site) Stealthy and better left alone in the wild, Originally brought from Cuba to Pet shops in the US as exotics in the 40's and 50's , many escaped and many were released into the South Florida environment, Does not tolerate the cold very well and many are found dead after bitterly cold winter days (as bitterly cold as South Florida gets  )
It can change colors pretty fast to camouflage themselves, a neat animal to see in the wild!!!

Flash as main!!!, Handheld, image cropped for compositional considerations!!

Alex, He's a handsome devil, very aware of people gazing and slips into hiding readily!!! That's why I froze in place when you spotted him ... otherwise, he'd be outa' there. I believe the ones with yellow are the males. Love the color and sharp details!!! :D :D :D

Oh, you sure had a fine day yesterday. This is a beauty with incredible detail and a magic eye that's looking right at you.

As to their temperament:

"(my personal experience trying to help an injured anole-Never again will I ever pick one up, It left a nasty/deep razor sharp cut in one of my fingers that took a long time to heal, and I had to use a pair of plier to release his jaws from bite site)"

Well....that's what you get for messing with anything with a tail!!!
Great shot!!!

Lizards have the best skin for photography IMO- such interesting details. Not that we have any here in AK... Nice comp and colors.

The obvious question here is "How long did it take for you to locate pliers to get one to release it's grip?"

Flash as main; handheld 70-200 & 2X?! I'm very impressed at the sharpness. (The D70 will sync at 1/500?) Love the vertical lines here.

Rich, It was one of the most painful bites from any animal bar none, I had walk slowly toward my garage with the lizard hanging from my hand , since with every tiny movement he would clamp down even harder
on my finger, It took a little over five minutes from start to finish, I saw my life flash before my eyes in that eternity!!

Yes , the D70 syncs at 1/500, the f/10 helps with the DOF, I have pretty steady hands but credit goes to the VR function on that lens, works pretty well!!

Wow! Five minutes! You've got much more restraint than I. My rule: bite me and die! I would have been looking for a hammer! (Easier rule for bugs! Good thing my children never bit me. ;) )

My very thought, then it hit me like a ton of bricks, I had loaned my hammer to my neighbor and he wasn't home, a desperate search for a pair of plier ensued, I did happen to glance at the propane torch in my desperation and entertained the though for a couple of seconds, but adding a burn to a nasty bite put a damper on that plan!!!

You likely have something even better than a propane torch probably right at hand! Try a Better Burner - I mean Better Beamer! ;)
