Canon D30 100-400 IS @ 150mm 1/125 f6.7
Slight crop, levels, USM, and dodged the white of the eye a little to make it a bit more visible at web size.

Not nearly as good as the one E.J. posted the other day, but I like the background, and the breath.

I like this one a lot - I like the background of your shot better (I have one like this too but your background is superior.)

The breath is a real bonus, as are the "scuff marks" in the hair on the backs that show where they've been scratching and/or fighting.

Over the last year I have seen many images of this instant in time. I have enjoyed them all but I really like this one because it puts the ELK in their environment.. Much to enjoy here. Thanks for posting..

Hey Steve,

I like it a lot, but I wish, like Alex, it weren't so tight on the elk ... more of the background would make it even 'more better'. :D

You did tremendously well shooting this scene on the side of the road though .. the snow helps, clearly, but it really doesn't give me a feel of an 'elk by the road' (a major nit, IMO!) -- great job.

Cheers

Carl

Thanks!

That's why it's cropped tight, to get rid of the road
I'm thinking I may print this one, leave it full frame, and clone in some snow to cover the road in the foreground.

This is really nice, Steve. I have a question however: How did you clone EJ out of the f/g?

Nice work.

Steve, you need not sell yourself short. This is an incredible image in its own right. We certainly made the most of this encounter, covering it from every conceivable angle. I think this is one of the best of the taken, and you should be very proud of your accomplishment.

Best,

Chas

It looks like WWF week at NSN! :) (That's World Wrestling Federation rather than World Wildlife Fund!)

Breath, background, and detail in the antlers and fur make this shot for me. Also wish for just a bit more room left and right. (If you had one shot at 100 rather than 150 a crop to panoramic might work well.)

Rich
