Can anyone recommend a website or book that talks about shooting video with an SLR? I'm looking from basic information from shooting the video to what to do once you the video ect.

I've tried playing around with the video on my 5DmarkII and have so far been disappointed and a bit frustrated. The quality does not seem very good and I seem to be running into trouble with the sound. When watching a video all I hear for sound is air even if I'm talking holding the camera not even a foot away. I can barly hear my voice.

Thanks, Aaron

Aaron,

Here are a few books that I recommend for learning video.

1. From Still to Motion. This is a great book that focusses on using DSLR cameras to create video. While it covers some basic techniques it also goes into a lot of advanced stuff (lighting, sound, etc).

2. Go wild with your Camcorder. A short book that does a good job introducing the basics of wildlife filmmaking. It does not mention DSLR cameras, but many of the skills overlap.

3. Filmmaking for Teens: Pulling off your shorts. This book gives the best introduction to the filmmaking process I have come across. While it doesn't mention DSLRs or wildlife filmmaking, it does a great job of covering the different steps. This book formed the basis for the filmmaking class I have been teaching for the past 4 years. I highly recommend it.

I hope this helps. Regarding audio, this is one of the major weaknesses of DSLR for video. To get good audio, you will need to use external microphones that can be plugged into the camera.

Alexander,

That first link is fantastic (the second might be great, but I haven't had a chance to look it over yet). Thanks for posting it.
