This video was taken with the Nikon D300s and the 200-400 vr lens using a 1.4 and at times a 1.7. Sometimes a still photo just doesn't do it. I used two cameras in the blind, one for still and one for the video. What happens I didn't expect to see. Thanks R J Wiley

Nicely done, RJ. Very sad to see.

In 1993 I had a similar experience after video taping the nesting of a pair of loons for a month one chick couldn't get back up on the nest and the second one had just hatched. The adult wouldn't leave the nest to get the first chick and it swam around and around and then disappeared. I had no boat to go and rescue the chick. By the next morning the second chick was gone too. The adults had called all night and for several days after. I felt like I had lost my own.

I hope you will get to video this another time when the outcome is better!

Hi RJ,
Great, but sad video. What are you using for equipment?

This video documents the harsh realities of life- those in the life of the sand hill crane. I have witnessed the struggles of peahens in bringing up the young ones. For all ground nesting birds, bringing up a healthy chick is an uphill task. Too many predators around-dogs, snakes and people!
