Could someone tell me if there are any differences between the old and new gitzo leveling bases the 1321 vs 5121?

I have the 5121 on my 1548 Gitzo, It has a short centre tightener so that the tripod can go to its lowest setting without it hitting the ground-great piece of kit, Dont know how i lived without it

Thanks Dave. Did you previously have the 1321 where this was an issue?

Aaron. I have the 1321 and never had the issue but but choose to get the new shorter handle for it anyway before it was an issue;

Works like a charm.

I have the 1321 with original handle and it does get in the way if you want to lay the legs out flat. I would think even the shorter handle would not work in that situation because the tripod plate sits right on the ground (providing everything is flat). Those that have the 5121, is this true? I have one of the newer style Gitzo pods (do not remember the #, possibly 3541, and it is currently packed in the suitcase ready to fly home in a couple hours.)

Even the short handle hits the ground before the tripod goes all the way down flat. However if you are on soft ground, such as on a beach etc., you can simply stick it into the ground a bit. The other difference between old and new is about 2 degrees less adjustment in the newest one plus a little bit LESS sturdy build - particularly the mounting surface which is thinner now.
