My guess would be the EF 300mm f/4L IS lens. Since it still has the first generation, 2 stop, IS, it would be logical to think that it is due for an overhaul of the IS.

Yeah but so does the 100-400, 28-135 and others ;)

Then there's lenses like the 400/5.6 which doesn't have it at all...

Because they mention macro in their press release it seems likely it will be a macro lens. Otherwise, I don't see the point in mentioning that.
Cheers,
Doug

Remember that the manufacturers call the close focus of consumer zooms as macro too ;)

I'd love to see an update to the 100-400. Optics, AF, and I.S. are all aging. I know that it will be updated at some point in time, and I wonder if the push/pull will be scrapped in favor of a twist zoom? It would also be great to see a lens that approaches the Nikon 200-400 VR in performance, but keeps the size of the Canon 100-400 IS.

I'd imagine that the smaller size of the Canon is due to the aperture difference. The Nikon is a constant f/4, which will automatically make it a larger lens. If Canon keeps the same 4.5/5.6 aperture, the size shouldn't change too much.

That would be physically impossible. a 400mm f/4 lens (like the Nikon 200-400) by definition has to have at least a 100mm diameter front element while a 400mm f/5.6 lens (like the Canon 100-400) only has to have a front element that is 71mm in diameter.

I'm not so concerned with a constant f4, just an improved autofocus, IS, and better glass. Performance based on these factors, rather than just more light gathering ability.

I'll put my money on a new 180ish macro. Why? Because I have one, and that's my luck

I would think that this additional type of stabilization would be more useful when handholding the camera vs when tripod mounted. I believe this added technology is accomplished with a gyroscope and accelerometer. Thus, it may affect lag time or panning ability. But, I am just theorizing and could be wrong.

The announcement has been made of the first lens with the new system, it's the 100mm macro. It also gets UD glass and "L" designation, Here's the announcement on DP review:

Well when Canon comes out with the rumored 200mm to replace the 180mm, you'll only be 20mm out
