Strange question, but I'm looking to remove the built in hood from 300/4 and 400/5.6 lenses.

I don't mind a permanent removal...just don't want to break anything in the process.

Has anyone attempted this?

Can't help you but you may risk loosing the warranty for your lens. I am no legal expert but this is something I could imagine would happen.

The lenses are out of warranty period, so it's not a concern in my case, but yes - absolutely. I imagine this is borderline intentional destruction!

I'm a neat freak about my gear and just want to do it cleanly. I know there is at least a gasket between the hood and lens, as I've had one break before. Should there be something like exposed circuitry or something odd, I wouldn't risk it. But otherwise, I have little or no use for the hoods (my shooting style) and would be cutting corners to allow them to fit in a bag. Difference seems negligible, but I think it might make or break my ability to squeeze them in between the dividers.
