I've been having fun taking a friend's Nikon 200–400 f/4 VR for a spin on my D700 but am thinking that a 500 f/4 VR would be a better match if I opt for an exotic. One issue is that the 2 m minimum focusing distance of the 200–400 is very handy, and some calculations show me that I'd need to stack the 12, 20, and 36 mm Kenko extension tubes to get a similar overall magnification ratio. Has anyone used the 500 with this kind of extension? How well does it work, and what does infinity map to?

Thanks,

Andreas

I haven't had much luck with more than one extension tube on my 600 AFSII. The kenko tubes seem to have a lot of play, and once they are stacked, the AF and metering is hit and miss.
