Parrot Snake, Costa Rica

D1x, 300f4, iso 400, f5.6, 1/125, Canon 500D diopter, SB800, handheld, full frame (0.87:1 magnification factor).

This is the first and only subject I have photographed with this setup. I usually attach the two-element diopter to my 80-200 f2.8 for close up work (allows 0.67:1) or else add extension tubes to my 300f4-S but these were all unavailable when I came across this parrot snake. After getting this image I stopped down to get more detail but I like the view of the tongue and lighter BG in this image. Comments, critiques and reposts welcome.

The selective DOF here is quite mesmerizing Jerry! The eye and tongue detail is superb. Nice one! 8) :)

This is terrific JM. The background is just right for the subject. I am really surprised 1/125 would stop tonge motion as well as it did but no doubt flash helped also.. Thanks for sharing..

Nice job getting the tongue Jerry. I do find the blown out lower areas to be quite distracting-perhaps you could selectively burn them in in PS.

Tongue is great and snake really pops from the background. Would like a bit more DOF, but at 1/125 & ISO 400, doesn't look like you had much in options.

Cool shot. Excellent technique at handholding with a 500D. Every time I try mine I end up with everything OOF as the slightest movement throws the focus out.
Love that tongue :)

Cool little guy-would love to see a bit more DOF but there just wasn't enough light for that it seems
