What this picture doesn't tell you is that my wife now needs rotator cuff surgery. While at Santee Lakes I discovered that the Ring-necked Ducks were much shier than the Wood Ducks, Mallards, and other various hybrids. My wife was throwing corn far out on the lake to attract them into camera range and complained about her sore shoulder for the next 3 days.

I guess asking her to carry my tripod-mounted 600mm w/ D1X, and flash attachment is now out of the question.

Nikon D1X, 600mm w/ 1.4 TC, f/5.6, 1/750 sec, no flash

Great shot, as usual, Steve. This duck reminds me of an alien, with that elongated head. I wonder if that's a feather formation or the skull. I especially like the hint of magenta in the shiny black parts. Gives it a "so black it's colorful" feel.

Sorry to hear about your wife. I suppose you could carry the flash.

Very nice, if you ever want to get really close to these guys, come to Phoenix in the winter - they are the least shy of our many winter visitors and will come to within a couple of feet of you.

Good close shot Steven. The water drops and the full beak make this very nice.

Steve,

This is a very nice shot. I love the low perspective.

If your wife only has one bad shoulder she can carry your stuff with the good one. You know...the glass is half full...

Nice shot Steve,
I was at the Santee lakes this past wednesday afternoon shooting with my dad. We got lucky and were able to get the ringnecks very close with a little corn. I know how shy they normally are.

A great shot of one of my ducks. 8) Looks like the sun was a bit high but the whites are going to be over on these guys with any detail shown in the dark feathers. I like you r exposure on this one and sharp too. Maybe just a bit more DOF, as it looks like you had plenty of light.
