Male Red-winged blackbird
Collins Lake, NY

Canon 500mm F4 IS
Canon 1.4 MkII
Kinesis Safari sack on car window
F5.6, ISO 400, IS1

On this first day with the new lens, I parked near this shoreline filled with these blackbirds. I did not have time to set up fill-flash, during my lunch hour, but the showery day would have benefited from it. The background is the water, not sky.

You must be pleased, Jeff. Nice image. I agree a bit a flash would have been nice. But you take what you can! I see you shot from a bean bag - don't trust that light-weight tripod yet?

Excellent image, Jeff. The background is very nice. The exposure of the blackbird looks fine to me.

Looks like the new lens is in good hands.

Jeff, wonderful bird and great exposure to boot, the whites on the perch are a tad hot , but not too bad, The 500 is a wonderful lens, Sandy says so!!!, Plus how you like the new experimental camera from Canon the 1.4D Mark II ??
