The Ngorongoro crater has the most relaxed herebivores as long as they are not being hunted. They paractically ignore vehicles so close up portraits are really obtainable. The only 2 negatives are the vehicles must stay on the roads and you have to be out of the park by 6PM even though great light is still present til at least 6:30.

Jim,

Incredibly detailed portrait. Exposure is dead on and I love the teeth. Thanks for sharing.

A lot of fun, for sure!

I'm not normally a fill flash fan, but I can't believe how much the tiny eye highlight adds to this. Was that you or was it a sky reflection? If you, do you use a warming filter on your flash to keep it from creating a blue tinge?

Noel,

That's a natural catchlight. No, I have never used any warming filter on my flash.

Quite a handsome animal and fine photo. He appears to have had a run-in with his nose; is the red in the middle a wound?

Love it Jim. Wish I had one half as good. Perfect exposure, sharp as a tack, an expression that makes the shot sing!
