From McNeil River State Game Santuary in July 2002. These two guys both wanted the same fishing spot.

Canon EOS 3, 300/2.8 + 1.4 TC, Provia

Wow! I like the thumbnails. I've been too busy to spend much time here lately so this was a pleasant surprise.

OBTW, the application period for McNeil permits is open for a few more weeks....

300 + 1.4 puts you far closer than I want to come, but I love the intimacy here. Love the sense of anticipation - will a fish pop up or will these two have at it? Only wish that there wasn't a shadow on the snout of the one on the right. Very nice nonetheless.

Tim, great job catching the competitive interaction between these two. I'd prefer that the left bear's ear weren't clipped, but would still be more than thrilled if I had anything close to this.

Great shot Tim. There is so much tension in this shot. I want to see what happened next :)

Thanks for the comments.

Dave, There really isn't a "next" photo. As was typically the case, one bear backed down before it got physical. All of the fights that I recall occurred when one of the bears actually had a fish. Even then, if the bear with the fish was sufficiently intimidated, it dropped the fish and moved away. When fights did occur, the fish was usually the winner if wasn't too injured so that it could swim away. Or it may have been swept away by the current. After the fight, which usually only lasted a minute or two, the victor would look for his spoils- which were long gone. It was rather humorous!

Your Technical Ability Real Shows Here... The Possible Blown Areas Are Just Right... And The Drak Areas, Have The Needed Detail To Bring This All Together.... Only "Minor" Nit... I Would Like To See A Eye Ball Or Two.... They Have Such Expressions... But Again, That Is A "Minor" Nit At Best!!!!

From What I Have Seen Of the Shooting Conditions And Angles, This Is Even More Impressive, Than The Photo Leads You To Believe....

I Tend To Not Get Too Critical, Because I Have So Much To Learn.. My Technical Abilities Are There, It Is My Composition And Light Qualities I Need To Continue To Improve! Thanks....

Nice Work.....
