We hear a lot of sad stories these days of species being pushed toward extinction so I thought it might be a nice change to let you all know of a rather miraculous discovery. It seems the New Zealand storm-petrel, not seen for 180 yrs, is not extinct! The first fuzzy photos were taken a year ago and at that stage I was sceptical, but tonight I saw on the news the first TV pictures ever taken of this species (a group of 11 birds). Although still to be officially confirmed, DNA confirmation now seems just a formality and all ornithologists who have seen it are convinced. If you're interested in some background on this remarkable find check out Brent Stephenson and Sav Saville’s site.

Remarkable indeed. Interesting how it could survive unnoticed for that long.
