I have read about the Focus Preset on the Canon telephotos but not how to use it or why and when it should be used. Can anyone shed any light on this for me please.

Regards
Peter

The large Canon telephotos 300 f/2.8 and up have a focus preset. Basically you can teach the camera a specific focus point and then a quick touch of the knurled ring on the lens will refocus the lens to that position. It is extremely useful in bird photography where you have a set perch that you want the bird to come to - you can set that as the focus preset point and then focus on other things in other places. As soon as a bird lands on that perch you engage the focus preset and the bird on the perch snaps into focus and you don't have to wait for the lens to find find focus.
