Grey Wolf
Captive
EOS300D, Sigma 100-300 F4

It has been bitterly cold these past few days, with a real biting wind. We have no snow yet in our part of the country but the animals at our favourite wild animal park are all quite active now - maybe they sense Spring round the corner :) or perhaps they are just trying to keep warm! Certainly we had a job to keep our fingers from getting too cold while out with the cameras but it was well worth it just to see old friends - like this Wolf pack who we always enjoy seeing.

All comments and critiques always welcome and appreciated and thanks for looking.

Handsome critter...a little crop from the bottom to remove the out of focus grass and it stands out more.

Nice work per your usual high standards. I like the vertical comp with the subject decentered looking to her/his right slightly. Light is very nice for the subject and greens in the background are a big plus.. Have you used flash on any of these guys... I have on some and not on others and I am still undecided about flash with mammals.. Just wondering your thoughts.. Thanks for posting..

Thanks Dennis, funny you should mention flash - we experimented with using and not using flash the past couple of days on these wolves and in the cloudy winter light (or lack of it!) I found a more pleasing result with NOT using flash. I often do use it with mammals depending on the type of daylight, but found that using it in these darkish conditions resulted in 'flashed' eyes which gave a very strange look. This particular Wolf was taken without flash and resulted in the lovely natural eye colour you see here. I love the eyes of wolves and Huskies. :)

Nice shot! I agree taking a bit off the bottom would help focus on the wolf.

Thanks for the reply Carol. I am leaning your way as well, as those flashed out eyes really can kill a photo and are a PIA for fixing in PS, even though it is pretty quick.

I just ordered a couple of the wimberely six inch extension modules for my flash bracket. I am going to raise the flash a foot and put it to the side rather then right over the lens and see if this will avoid the eye problem while also giving a little pop. Birds seem to look great with fill but not always sure on the mammals..

When I get a chance (??) I will let everyone know how it worked.

Thanks again for the post and notes that followed.

Nice one carol. I love the green moss and the grass. They are a nice accent to the wolf. Great eyes and I like them here without flash. I agree a little off the bottom helps the comp. Thanks for your continued posting in Wildlife. I love seeing your work and how far you have come in such a short time since beginning photography. Keep up the great work.

Dave says this is the only way to avoid the 'flashed' eyes Dennis - but this is even more gear to carry around isn't it!! but I agree, it does sound logical to place the flash offside to the lens. :?

Very nice shot, but I wish the wolf's eyes didn't look so sad.
