I spotted a small band of Dall sheep were moving up the mountain side before they had seen me. I moved into their route of travel to get some close up shots. This is one of the photos from when they first came into view. It certainly does not adhere to some of the "rules" for wildlife photography- the main subject is centered and the second sheep is partially hidden by the first.

Just wondering what others think of this one.

EOS 3, 500/4, Provia, tripod.

I think I would have prefered to see at least the second eye and horn of the second ram, but I'm sure from your position that wasn't possible. The exposure and focus of the first sheep looks dead on, and I like the dark brown background for contrast.

Tim, I like this a lot - because the ewe is in the lead! :P I like that she's so sharp and perfectly exposed, and that it's up close and personal while showing that she's climbing some steep terrain.

Knowing the rules and then breaking them can be very effective in certain cases. Here it says that there was more then one sheep, probably a group, all moving upwards along the same path. As noted above exposure and sharpness are right on the money.. It works for me.. Thanks Tim

Hey Tim,

My first thought when I saw this was 'whoa . he's gone digital'. One of the cleanest, sharpest scans I've seen.

This image tells a great story .. and the narrative is complete just as it is.

Cheers

Carl

This image does tell its own story. I do wish the other eye of the second sheep was visible.

This works for me Tim, excellent shot and tack sharp. Some rules are made to be broken

I agree with Carol, the half hidden second goat adds to the picture, if more of the second goat was showing I would want it sharp

Even though I would wish to see either a little more of the second sheep or none at all I think this is a great shot. The sharpness is is excellent.
