Whitetail Deer (Odocoileus virginianus)
Shenandoah National Park

10D, 100-300 f4.5-5.6, ISO 400, f11, 1/4, tripod. USM.

This is the same large buck I posted a couple of weeks ago that stayed partially hidden in the brush. This time he came out into the open to patrol the meadow.

Comments/critiques/suggestions welcome. Thanks for looking.

Great shot, especially with that alert expression and left leg forward to suggest motion.

Hey Chris,

That's a great buck, for sure. The light doesn't help you here, the close side of the buck seems a bit dark. I like the pose (ears up!) but the face looks a bit soft to me. Why f11 if you were down to 1/4 on the s/s?

Perhaps shooting from a bit lower might have given the buck a little more power.

Cheers

Carl

Nice shot of an awesome buck.. I think it wouldnt hurt it to lighten it a little overall, slightly, but nice as is also..

The shot I took before this was at f5.6 and when I looked at the LCD, it looked like I needed more DOF to keep the head sharp. In retrospect, I guess it was camera/subject motion due to the slow SS. This was taken early in the morning on a slightly overcast day so the light (or lack there of) wasn't helping. I also agree with your point about the lower angle.

Thanks for the honest critique. I appreciate the suggestions.

Like the pose and composition. Surprisingly sharp for 1/4 I think.
