Having made the switch to digital, I am now looking for a digital projector. My goal is to purchase a projector that is easy to travel with and flexible enough to give presentations to both small classes/workshops as well as large groups. I have searched through a number of different forums and am now looking for people with first hand experience with particular projects. Thanks for your help.

When I was researching digital projectors a year ago I kept coming back to the Epson units. They are incredibly small and light and come in a variety of output levels. the vast majority of photographers that I know that use digital projectors use Epson units however there are several manufacturers that make good ones. There are also two types, DLP and LCD, while each has some advantages and disadvantages, I think in most cases which type you have is insignificant. I would recommend getting one with a 1024x768 resolution. The power, as measured in lumens depends on the type of presentations you will be doing. If you will present in small gatherings and smaller rooms, a 1200 Lumens unit is plenty powerful enough. Even in 20 person conference rooms these do a good job. In larger rooms where your projection distance is greater, a 1500 Lumens unit does a good job. If you are going to be projecting in larger venues like auditoriums a 2000 Lumen unit fits the bill.

Chris, I use the Epson 53c. It always gets rave reviews from the audience, with many coming up afterwards wanting to know what projector I was using.

This projector rocks, at 1700 lumens it is bright enough for larger audiences, has rear projection capability when needed, and uses high-aperture LCDs for vivid images and superior color saturation.

If you can swing the extra bucks the 73c is XGA (higher res), but lower lumens.

Best,
