Hey all...

I guess that this could go either here or in the Digital fourm.

Anyway, I was wondering if one was to buy a new monitor, would you still buy a CRT or would you buy an LCD monitor??

This past January I went to a John Shaw workshop, and while he stated that LCD monitors are getting better and better, a CRT monitor was still the safest bet for color correction and calibration.

That was 8 months ago, and I have not read a computer magazine in ages. Thus, I do not know who has done what in the field of monitors.

If LCD are the "cat's meow" at this time, then what are the brands that are hot?? I use Windows so I do not think an Apple monitor will work. I have heard of LaCie as well as Eizo, but what about LCDs for Sony, ViewSonic, or Samsung??

Thanks for any advice!!!

Cheers,

Mark in Austin

As far as I know, John Shaw is still correct. You can get an LCD monitor from LaCie that will be very good but a good CRT is still better.

I just purchased two 19" ViewSonic (VP191B) LCD monitors since Heather and I are spending the majority of our waking hours in front of the computer. We got them yesterday!

I agree that a CRT is still the safest bet for color matching and calibration but these are still pretty good (but expensive at $700+ each).

I have heard that for LCD's the ViewSonics are the best right now. I'm happy with mine.

BTW I now have a 19" Dell (Sony Trinitron) that I would sell for a song ;)

What song do you want me to sing for that monitor? My talents are limited, so lets not go with anything that will strain my vocal cords

Some of the high end LCD monitors with high contrast ratio are starting to rival the best CRT's. Specifically those made by Apple are the very best followed by the Viewsonic Pro models and the LaCie model - although the LaCie is starting to get dated with only a 400:1 contrast ratio while the new offerings are now in the 600:1 range. LCD's tend to be brighter than a properly calibrated CRT too and cause less eyestrain as there is no flicker (seen or unseen)
