On my first trip to Kenya I was fortunate to witness these two young cheetahs chasing each other across the plains. It was a short chase and I only got a few shots, these being the best. I would love to have the opportunity again as both my abilities and my equipment have improved since I shot this in 1997.

Nikon N90s with Tamron 200-500 MF zoom, on beanbag from roof of landrover, Provia or Sensia 100.

Holy cow, this is great! I see that you had the pan blur technique mastered years ago, and that it's possible to get great images on film too! :?

Cheryl,
I really enjoy the way you present your images. The crop you've chosen here is right on. The pano really accentuates the chase.

Thanks for posting. This shows some serious good technique, manual focus and panning at the same time. Excellent work! I also hope you get this opportunity again in the future but this may be a tough act to beat!

Good action and choice of crops. This IMO would really be a killer at a slow shutter speed.

Fantastic technique to catch the action. Pano crop helps the image too. Well done.

Cheryl, you got not one, but two in the air. A tough one too beat for sure, but if anyone can do it ...

Best,

Hey Cheryl,

This is excellent. It might not be perfectly sharp (hard to tell here), but the image is very dynamic. There's not too many folks around who'd feel this shot needs imrpovement. I'm curious, with your improvements as a photographer and with your newer equipment, what you'd like different about this one.

Great shot.

Cheers

Carl

Carl,

I would love to gett his pose again with a slower shutter speed blurring the BG more. This was a lucky shot as I doubt I had tried panning much if at all prior to this. I would like to think that with AF and a better understanding of how to shoot pan blurs (ie slower shutter speeds) I could intentionally get a shot similar to this if the action was there. The heads on both cheetah are actually pretty sharp.

Cheers

Hey Cheryl,

thanks .. the more I look at this one, the more I like it as is .. the 2 cheetahs leaning in opposite directions is great .. the front one is cutting back to his left, while the one behind looks like he's turning more to his right .. great counterpoint stuff.

Cheers

And this would be the green trip? :)

Love the action, nicely captured. Looks like these guys still need to grow into their legs. Do you recall what shutter speed you used (silly question, I know, for a shot that long ago when you undoubtedly shot a bunch that day) and what you would shoot it at now?

Yes, this would be the green (El Nino) trip. Sorry I dont remember what shutter speed I used but would guess it was between 1/250 and 1/500. Now if I was trying a pan blur I would try 1/60.
