Hello

Does anyone know if Sigma has made an upgrade to this lens in the last year or so? Is the EX model new or has it always been called that? Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Does any one have any experience with this lens, Weight, picture quality, over all like or dislike of it?

Thanks.

Please do a search on this topic in this forum. This has been covered several times. In general image quality is very good with slightly lower contrast than the Nikon or Canon 500 f/4's and slightly more flare when shooting into the sun. Focussing speed is very good and about 25% slower than the Nikon or Canon products. Weight is very light for a lens in this class.

Sometimes a used Canon 500mm f/4.5 (the predecessor to the f/4 IS) runs about the same as a new Sigma.

There was quite a good review in the Aug 2002 Shutterbug by Peter Burian. He was quite impressed all around with the lens. Sorry, I'd post a link, but for some reason that page isn't coming up right now.

I was in your position and then made the jump. Although I would like to own the AFS 500 f4, I cannot afford it. I now own the Sigma and agree with EJ and Walkinman. I also bought the Sigma 1.4 TC before I found out it would not autofocus. I then modified my Nikkor TC14E II and it will autofocus with the Sigma. I bought the lens new on eBay for $2850.00, but saw it listed recently for $2500. I have had no quality problems with the lens. The lens will take professional quality photos at half the price of the Nikkor.
