At the recent visit to Yosemite valley with Gary Crabbe et al we spent the midday hours using the soft light from the cloudy conditions to study details in the valley forests.

Any honest critique warmly appreciated. Please hammer on!

Very pleasing composition, and good job on keeping the branch and leaves all in focus. The background seems to compete for attention with the subject; a more blurred background would enhance the branch and leaves.

However, I do like the feel of this one.

Graceful curve of the branch and framing of the subject leaves. Maybe more focal length would have simplified the background, but I like this as it is.

Excellent comp with this one, although I too feel that the background competes with the branch and leaves.
Wonderful lighting I might add! :)

I like it a lot. A little bluring of the bachground would make it even better.

Thanks for the comments! They are very helpful!
Does this version work better wrt BG/FG separation?

I realize that you asked for more blur, but I didn't manage to get a good selection that made a PS blur look natural so instead I've changed the colors;
I darkened the BG generally in curves, I dodged the highlights and I selectively desaturated some reds in the BG.

Does it work better or did I over/under do it?

Thanks for all valuable feedback!!!

Your second version really works for me. I love how the darkened background adds separation and really makes the leaves pop. The curve of the stem is sweet and I love how there is one green leaf and a yellow one. Nicely done!
