Elk
Jasper NP, Alberta, Canada

The elk herds seemed to hang around at the edges of the woods and around the town of Jasper, especially very late in the day. This one was photographed from the car that Dennis and I were riding in. I cannot remember if it was out my window or over Dennis shoulder on his side. Either way, thank you again Dennis for getting me in position for a lot of the 'car as a blind' shots.

Canon 10D with 100-400IS @ 235mm handheld from an Explorer. ISO 1/800, 1/80 sec (thank you IS!!!) @ f/6.3 I wanted more DOF to get the ears in focus but I was already pushing the limits of ISO and 'shutter' speed so I had to be happy with getting the eyes and nose.

Comments and critiques always welcome.

Sweet shot Cheryl. Love the alert pose.. One of the things I really enjoy about photographing deer, antelope, elk etc is that they hold still... fire a test shot, the ears go up and they strike a pose allowing us to really push the limits on the light.. I think the predawn or dusk light is when they really look the best also.. Nice work on color balance and exposure!

I said, wish this had more DOF, then I saw the shooting data and understood

Very nice shot.

The DOF is a very minor nit. This is a wonderful face shot of a beautiful animal.

Amen to Dennis' comments. Way to push the envelope (ISO & speed) and still get a wonderful portrait.
