American Bison Bison bison

My first post in the NEW Wildlife Forum. :D

This was taken up by Genesee Park just a few miles west of Denver. There is a bison herd that was established in the late '20s as a breeding herd to repopulate the American Bison. The animals are kept in a large free roaming area that does have a fence around it. The adults are tagged.

Not the best framing as I was over-gunned for the situation. My choice was to cut off virtual feet or the mother's back. Did I make the right choice?

EOS 1V, 600/4, 1.4X, Tripod
Provia 100, Eval @ 0, Av @ f6.3
Cropped to 8X10

Comments and critiques are always welcome. Thanks for looking.

This is great - I love the interaction. I wonder if it would have been even better without the 1.4x.

Great interaction. I think cropping the moms back was a much better choice than losing the feet.

This is wonderful! Good job of getting separation for the eye, as it shows nicely. Cropping the back was the better choice but I agree with E.J. about taking off the 1.4xTC. A terrific behavior image!

I'd say you made an excellent choice as the interaction (nursing and mothers turn to gaze at the calf) is lower in the frame.. I really like this shot, the quality of the light and the interaction are excellent IMHO.. Thanks for contributing to Wildlife at NSN.n

IMO the right choice for leaving the feet. I don't think the image would feel right otherwise. A nice imagae of this moment.

The right choice Bill and you did well to get detail in the eye - not easy with these animals. Great interaction between mother and calf.

Bill,

An image with strong emotional appeal. In particular I like the catch light in the mothers eye. Given the choice between cutting off the back or the feet, IMO you definitely made the right choice -- I wonder if it would be a stronger image if you crop off more of the back?

Right choice. Way to catch a tender interaction.
