Taken yesterday, at Miami Parrot Jungle. Hard to get one with a "natural" background. I felt in love with his/her colors!

Actually this is a Hyacinth Macaw. A very cool and ultra expensive bird.

Ultra expensive because they are almost extinct, primarily because of the illegal wildlife trade which has prompted many people in Brazil to raid parrot nests, snatching up the baby parrots to sell to wildlife smugglers, causing nearly complete nesting failure for decades, precipitating the massive decline in many parrot and macaw populations. Still sickens me to know only 3000 or less of these awesome birds survive (and to see them in the wild is truly inspiring. They are amazing birds...if one has a chance, a visit to the Pantanal in Brazil to see them is definitely worth it).

Great closeup photo...

Lets hope the Hyacinth Macaw doesn't end up with the same fate as the Lear's Macaw, though I fear that is probably likely.
