Shot this spring near Zion NP. Captive, with Triple D and the McDonalds. Can't possibly say enough good things about them. Had never photographed a captive animal before. Late afternoon light with Zion NP in the distance. Only thing I don't like here is the shadow the right rear leg casts on the left leg.

1Ds, 100-400 at 190, ISO 250, 1/800 at f8. A 1.6% rotation so it looks level and requisite crop.

Rich, this is a wonderful image, and you nailed him a great pose. I do think the shadow mentioned and flat lit background give the mtn lion a sort of cut and pasted effect.

Best,

I see what Chas means, this has an unreal look about it - mainly caused by that leg shadow. It is still a stunning shot!

Great shot of this cat Rich. He has grown a lot since I shot him in Utah the year before. You nailed the timeing on his jump.

Great job capturing the action here, Rich. You really did a nice job on exposure and placing the cat in the frame, and I like how his downward angle matches some background lines. I agree that, for whatever reason, the cat appears pasted onto the background a little bit, probably due to a combination of shadow lines, sharpness of the cat vs. the background, and the fact that he's so far away from solid ground.

Your timing here is outstanding...These cats are wonderful and I could photograph them forever. Regarding the other comments, I wonder how hard it would be to make the shadow under the leg go away. The appearance of pasted in is because you nailed the shutter speed and the cougar is so sharp against the background which is understandably oof. One other thought might be to try to selectively sharpen the foreground rocks under Andy to "anchor" the subject with foreground elements to avoid the paste in look and/or a slight burn in or darkening of BG.. But as it currently stands, this is a terrific photo.

Awesome shot and the shadow can be remedied easily enough. My very minor nit would be the cyan sky. again easy to remedy.
