Detail from the wing of an Owl Butterfly

EOS30, Sigma 180mm F3.5 Macro, Provia 100F, Handheld,

From a visit to a Butterfly Farm, amazing patterns on the wings of this Butterfly - there is this one, and another that looks just like Owl eyes - many Butterflies and Moths have eye patterns to deter predators. I wanted to capture this amazing image.

All comments and critiques always welcome and appreciated and thanks for looking.

Interesting image and different. I think a smaller aperature would have brought the whole wing in focus and you might want to try a Circular Polarizer next time to cut down on the reflection.

Thanks for your comments Harvey, always appreciated. :)

There isn't reflection as such, these wings are soft and furry yet the pattern colours are so amazing they give the impression of shadows and highlights and even 'reflection' shine as you would get from a moist eye. It's incredible how nature has contrived to protect these BF's from predation in this way. ( I agree I could have got more DOF! )

A very nice shot and a cool perspective. This probably needs to be shot at f/22 with supplemental light in order to get all of the DOF that it needs.

While the overall sharpness could be better you certainly did a good job of capturing the 3D look of the "eye".

Cool macro shot. Its incredible the protective elements built into nature. I tried to photograph a spider from the underside and the belly part looked like a face with two white spots for eyes and a curve.. Sharp where it needs to be here and perfect exposure. Nice work..

Hi Carol. Very neat idea! I really like the sharp in focus center area for all the detail it shows. I've always found the various camouflage to be amazing as well. This certainly looks like an owls eye!

I love it. I do like the narrow DOF to emphasize the "eye".

Neat shot Carol. I like this one a lot. The narrow DOF emphasizes the 'eye'.

I like the composition you chose with all the lines going right to the "eye". I'd wish for more DOF but you certainly put the important part in focus so this does work as is too. You're really taking to this macro stuff and finding great patterns to work with!
