I noticed all week that the feeders at the refuge down the street hadn't been filled so I went out and bought some seed and filled them up Saturday morning and tied a few perches on them. I came back Sunday morning to shoot and this is one of my favorites from that morning.

The compositional simplicity of this image appeals to me. A great, interesting perch and wonderful dark green, nearly monochromatic BG form a really nice setting for the black and white chickadee.

Very nicely done. a little USM on the bird would make it even better.

Wonderful. And, let me ask you a question? There's a distinctive look to this shot - Alan's shots often share it. The bird almost appears "painted" to a downy fullness. Is it merely the excellent lighting? I used to think it was a result of transparencies, but I note that I see it frequently in digital, too. What's the effect? Would you please describe your post-processing? Thanks! - Chris

I'm not sure. Maybe its the background partly too? There was very little post processing on this image. A slight crop for composition and cloning out part of the twig that was touching the bottom of the frame. I used the shadow/highlight tool on this to even out the shadows and balance the side-lighting a bit. Perhaps that could be it?

Bingo - that's it. Shadow/Highlight adds dimesnion that I can't get out of Curves...wow. Thanks sir! Applied it to the chickadee I just posted in the forum, and it looks worlds better, pulling more detail from the feathers. Owe you huge.

Love the comp, perch and bg ...
The bird is rather soft though, Michael!

This is amazing, the branch is absolutely perfect, although I could imagine it more slanted
