Red-Shouldered Hawk, Osceola County, FL

This weekend’s trip to Osceola County here in Florida resulted in some very productive shooting.

I came upon this Red-Shouldered Hawk on a fence post in some glorious early morning light. I shot the hawk from my van with a window tripod and my 500mm with a 2x converter. After about ten minutes, the hawk glided to the ground (sorry, no image). I switched to the 1.4x so that I could capture its return to the same post. Alas, the hawk flew to the adjacent post further way. I then proceeded to move my van to a new position.

Using the 500mm w/1.4x, I was able to capture the image below. It is full frame and uncropped. The background was also superior to that of my previous location.

sweet shot indeed. Gotta love how those fields give you that nice golden background

Robert--I really like this one a lot. I especially like that the transition from field to sky in the backgound is not centered!

Thanks for the positive feedback. I am really pleased with the image as well and glad that the RS moved to a better perch with better BG. Shooting from ones vehicle does limit composition but allows you to get close in w/o them flying off. I was lucky that a lot of things clicked and I was able to make such a pleasing image.

He/her was very un-phased by my presence and let me drive very close to him/her. I have already printed it and framed it for my home (as suggested). The high res 13x19 print on my Epson 2200 is much better then this image posted here.

Have some others from this trip that I will post Wednesday and Friday. Thanks again. :D

Very well captured. Can't say for sure that I've seen one of these yet.
