This 10 point buck was at Big Meadows, Shenandoah National park this morning. He was very interested in a doe which kept him within range much longer than usual. As you can see, he had been in a few fights resulting in the broken G2 on his left antler.
The light was not at the best angle at the time of this shot leading to a very contrasty image. I used the shadow/highlight tool to bring the shot back to what I remember seeing.
I also meet Chris Earle this morning shooting the same buck. Great guy and pleasure to finally meet him.
EOS 1Ds, 500mm f/4, at 1/500 sec, f/8, ISO 200. Converted with C1SE. In PSCS, cropped, S/H, USM.

Great portrait of a handsome buck! Comp-wise I'd wish for a tad more space in front of him or cropped just a little closer to the ear. Congrats!

You are right about the crop. I will see if there is room for that in the original. Now that you mention it, it does appear to be too centered.
Thanks,

Fine shot. A little more room left and top might be even better. The light is so close to frontal that I wonder if Shadow/Highlight really helped? I've grown to distrust it for the most part.

I think the overall composition and framing are excellent and shouldn't be changed. I am wondering if going lower by a couple of inches so that the grass to sky separation isn't right where his jawline is. Overall a fine photo in excellent light.

Excellent portrait. Looks like it could take a bit more USM especially around the eyes. thanks for posting.

Wil,

Sweet shot!!! It looks like you nailed the exposure and that golden light from this morning. Such a shame that his tine was broken off.

It was a pleasure to shoot with you this morning. Five minutes after you left, two smaller bucks came in to investigate the doe...this guy made quick work of them.

Ver nice Wil! I haven't been to shenandoah in a while, 2 of my friends may take me to bombay hook this weekend :!: :D , but if that doens't work out, I think I might check out big meadows. Was this a day trip? I live 2 hours from shenandoah, so I haveto get up pretty early for good light, is that what you do too, or are you not that far away?

I like the way the color of the buck and the background is so similar. I also like the composition as is but would be interesting to see the suggestion too. The light is so sweet.

Sweet shot. Sharpening around the eyes looks fine.

I agree with the comments about USM. However, if I try to add additional USM I get lots of artifacts. The 8x10 that I printed from the psd file was very contrasty, that is why I added some S/H, but very detailed. It did help to some extent.
This is the first file that I have had a great deal of difficulty getting the jpg to sharpen well. I guess I will have to experiment with the settings more.
Thank you everyone for your gracious comments,
