One of the lenses that has been absent from the mirrorless lens market is a 500mm prime.  Sigma just announced a 500mm f/5.6 for Sony (and L mount).  It is in the Sigma Sports or S line-up and weighs just a hair over 3lb.  That is actually lighter than the DSLR era Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF that was universally loved for its light weight.  Since Nikon has opened their mount to third party lenses, perhaps Sigma will eventually offer it for that system as well.  Also a fast 15mm fish-eye

... but only the L-mount of this lens is compatible with both 1.4x & 2x teleconverter.
I wonder why?

Sigma is part of the L-mount alliance so it is essentially their own mount.  But that is certainly a drawback for Sony shooters at least for now.

Looks like a good option for hand held action work like BIF but I hate the 15FPS limitation :-(

I was at a program on Saturday where a Sigma rep was there with the new 500. I played a little and was impressed. One lens I really missed when I left Nikon was the 500 PF. This lens is just about the same dimensions and weight. Felt very solid. If it would accept my Sony 1.4X I would buy one tomorrow. Bummer.

Yeah, unless Sigma comes out with it's own TC, I'm afraid sales will be very limited in the nature photography community.

I'd probably be willing to purchase their converter along with it if it was on par with the Sony converter (or Canon)
