Had the opportunity to use the 800 today and was lucky in finding a few good looking Bucks.  It's not as cold as it should be for the time of year, (par for the course now,  :(), but generally, if I want to find them in the winter, any edge of woodland/field is a good place to start as their eating habits change, after the gluts of autumn nuts.

This was where the 800 shined as they are quite skittish and will be off the second I move into their "zone", so the 800 gave me a decent working distance without any disturbance.

Z9 and 800 1/125 F8 at ISO 500.  (was using higher iso but once it was happy enough with my distance, I dropped the iso for IQ preferences).

Showing off its lovely antlers.

Please feel free to view uncompressed.

Thanks for looking.

Tomorrow I'll show one of the bucks passing through woodland.  (easier to get closer as more cover, but the 800 then seems a bit too long?).

A beautiful image of this very handsome buck Dave!  I love his rather 'aloof' expression and I think he has an eye on you ....... or is he admiring your 800......

A click for the larger view really shows the fine detail - and the link to the high rez version is a real treat.

Its a good image David. On the farm here in Australia we have a big herd of these dear. ATM we have about 15 bucks but only two we breed with. Our best buck got out and the poachers got him sadly.
The hi-res image has plenty of detail.

Gorgeous, elegant shot- just look at those antlers, and the "proud" look on his face.

Thanks Cindy and Axel. (am loving the 800 Axel. a real game changer and a dream to use. There are times its not the right lens, as in too much reach, and I probably wouldn't need it as a safari lens, but its tack sharp; has a distinct look on images, and is easily light enough to use all day....)

Wow David! This is a superlative capture and the magnified view is a pleasure for the eyes, being able to appreciate every little detail
of its fur and the texture of its horns. The pose is sublime.

Such a wonderful image, Dave. The head turn and the well exposed right antler adds extra interest. Detail is outstanding.
