Congratulations! This is the flora / macro image of the week for the week ending 10/22/04!

I visited Aransas NWR yesterday hoping for birds. I struck out on the birds but did get some good looks at butterflies, including lots of these.
After shooting these guys for several minutes I turned around and there was a 12' alligator sunning himself about 40 feet away. He scared the you know what out of me.

1DII with 100-400 (@ 400) and extension tubes, AV -2.3 (ISO 400, f9, 1/1,250).

Thanks for looking. All comments anc critiques welcome.

I've never seen a butterfly like this before. Lovely colors it has, and I think you captured it very well. I also like your composition.

Kind regards,
Hanne

First rate shot of this uncommon migrant from Mexico. Texas is the only place you can see these - I'm envious! But not of the alligators...

Hey Bruce, you keep away from them alligator's mate. Print this one out large and hang it up Bruce, its a stunner in details and a lesson in lighting.

All the best Bruce, great macro shot and work.

It is a White-striped Longtail (Chioides catillus).
