This is a Malpolon monspessulanus the biggest Portuguese snake (about 7 feet) killing the biggest portuguese lizard (Lacerta lepida).
I was in the field, just 30 km from Lisbon and I found this two fighting. The lizard was trying to escape so I waited about 15 minutes for the snake to dominate the lizard before I tried to approach myself. I shot two frames and the snake got spoked and moved away to a near brush leaving the lizard dead. I left the place immediately for the snake to have the chance to get back and eat the prey who fought so intensively. This snake is venomous but the fangs are back in the moth and the poison is not very strong so it doesn't represent a really danger to humans This was one of the luckiest preying scenes I ever witnessed. I published this image on a double page spread on the National Geographic Portugal. Thanks for looking and commenting. |
