I tried to upload an image at the new 1200 pixel wide limit and it got resized to what looks like about 900 pixels wide.
Why allow larger image dimensions if they will not get displayed at posted size?

You should be able to click on your image and see the full size version.

The way it works is as follows: Because there are some people using smaller screens, the site has been set to have a size of 950px (small enough for tablets and smaller laptops). Therefore your 1200px image is resized to fit that width. But if you click on the image in the post then the full size version will be downloaded and displayed. (It will be resized to fit your browser's width so you'll want to have the browser be at least 1200px and 1000px high in order to accommodate the largest images.)

Mike - as Neil indicated - it's the best of both worlds ;)  When you post the image there will be an initial smaller image shown and then a clickable enlargement up to the full 1200 pixels (unless your screen can't fit that in which case the image will be sized (down even in some cases) to your viewing window. :)
