Congratulations! This is the Image of the Week selection for the Travel and Culture Gallery, week ending 6th July, 2012!With the Tour de France leaving Rouen today, this is particularly appropriate!

I'm always looking for something special to make an image unique, memorable and personal. It didn't quite eventuate on this occasion but I'm pleased with the resultant mood here. I've created a blog journal about the story behind this photo and the pursuit of the X factor in photography.

Canon 5DMkII, EF 50mm 1.4, ISO 1600, f5.6, 1/8. I always tell my participants on travel photography workshops that exposure is built around shutter speed. What can you hand hold, what do you need to freeze motion? The latter was the important consideration here as the mans hat and umbrella had to be sharp.

Lovely, this has such a nostalgic yet quietly dramatic feel about it. THe man really makes the shot.

This is a wonderfully evocative image. Technically excellent. I enjoyed a few days in Normandy two years ago and stayed in the heart of the old city. I made many images in the ancient squares, streets and alleyways, but did not experience this particular scene. Thanks for sharing. Your image brought a smile to my lips and made me want to return to Rouen.

Missed this one. Very pretty. Did you bracket the shot or are the dark edges of the buildings the result of natural light fall-off?

This is all one exposure. The dark edges are just bits that weren't lit by the lamps.
