Congratulations! This is the Image of the Week selection for the Flora and Macro Gallery, week ending 3rd February, 2012!Papilio iswara iswara ( Great Helen )
Image
ISO1600 1/4000s F/3.5 , Nartural light , Handheld.
Canon 1D3 + Tamron 180mm Macro.

Great Helen is a large butterfly with a wing span of around 14 cm. In Singapore, Its occurrence is restricted to the Central Catchment Nature Reserves where its host plant Maclurodendron porteri is common. The adult fly rapidly at tree-top level , except when feeding on flowering plants.

Like most papilio it is a non-stop flapper even when feeding. After being frustrated with many blur shots , this was a better one, caught it lifting off the Bauhinia kockiana flowers.

Cheers!
Sunny

A super capture. It's a dramatic pose, flying up out of the frame on a diagonal, grounded by the flowers beneath. And there's so much good detail where it counts, even at the widest aperture - head, antennae, legs, wing edges.

Very nicely done, a good solution to the constant flapping ,your persistence paid off, great job on the DOF keeping it sharp allover.
