no witty title, just a lizard

I took this picture in Pandale, TX. We were driving down a road and saw this little guy from the window. We backed up and took a picture, backed up more and took a picture, and backed up more and he ran away.

This is cropped about 50%. The full picture has most of his tale and it's about twice as long as his body. I cropped it because I like the wrinkles in his skin and they show up better this way.

I know the background is messy and if you can overlook the "hot" rock you can see how long his little fingers are (are they fingers?). Are any of you lizard people? I'm wondering if he has just shed because he looks so "new" and the little piece of something under his mouth

Taken on 6-5-04 with 10d, 70.0-200.0mm @ 200.0mm Subject dist: 3.64m
1/500 sec, f/14 Mode: Av Metering: Evaluative ISO: 400

Comments/critiques welcome

Certainly worth the effort to back up. Nice colors and patterns. Nice pose. AK is rather short on lizards so I'm not much help in the ID department. Too bad the setting wasn't better, its a beautiful critter.

Shame about the DOF here Cindy, it includes rather a lot of the busy BG. Maybe F8 or even F5.6 or so would have sufficed?

Having said that, this is a stunning Lizard (what, I don't know) but the detail, pose and colour are all excellent!! Well done on getting such exquisite detail in this subject!! 8) 8) 8) :)

you have a female Collared Lizard here. The males are much much more vibrant in color being a tourquois (sp) blue to yellow with some red. We have them all over the place at the Wichita Mountains NWR. Good shot here and yes it is hard to get all the tail in the shot. Typically these lizards can be approached by foot if you are REAL slow.

I agree with the busy background but she is good in color.

Pretty girl. I would be tempted to use the clone on those twigs in the background but it is a good catch.

What a cutie - blurring the background a bit more would really take this over the top.

I like this a lot, especially the detail and color behind the eye and the top of the neck. I suspect you made the right choice in trimming the tail as you would have lost the best bits.

Wondeful colors. I little head turn would have been nice but I would have been happy to get this shot. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for all the comments and the ID. A long time resident of this area told me she was a he because of the colors. I would love to see a male if they are more colorful. And of course, you are right about the DOF. What a difference that would have made. I'll blame it on the "it's 5:00 somewhere" cocktails we had at the camp for lunch.
