I photograph/video wildlife (specifically birds) and I would like to know what are the microphones that are best suited for this application?

This will be used on either a 1D4, 5D2 and 7D.

It was suggested that I get a shotgun microphone such as sennheiser mkh416 or AT897 and a Fostex FR-2LE audio recorder. Would anyone have their own suggestions?

Many thanks for the responses

Pao,

I make do with the Sennheiser MKE 400 because its compact size allows me more freedom of movement to get stills as well as HDV.

If you want more potent audio stuff, here's a couple of links (if you've not seen these yet).

For birds, a shotgun mike is definitely what you want. The Rode NTG series are as good as Sennheisers and a whole lot less money. A wind shield of some sort will be mandatory. Your problems are going to be:

1. Where do you mount the mic?
2. What sort of plug-in jack does your DSLR have? Many good shotguns use a 3 prong male/female XR jack.
