I used to get this Webpage Error Message with IE 7 and now get with IE 8 also. It happened with WinXP and now on Vista x64. It doesn't seem to effect anything that I can tell, as for the operation of the Browser while on the site and seems to only happen while in the Forums. Doesn't happen with Firefox 3.0.8.

Webpage error details

User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.0; WOW64; Trident/4.0; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; Media Center PC 5.0; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30618)

Toney,

Could you give more information? Does it happen anywhere in particular in the forums? If you can post the URL it'll make it easier for me to trace the issue.

Thanks.

Thanks Nicholas. Its happening when opening any of the Forum threads while using IE. I thought it was related to the banner ads but I'm not real sure of that now.

For example: http:// www .naturescapes .net /phpBB3 /styles /prosilver /template /editor.js _ I added spaces to the (/) so the url wouldn't hyperlink.

I've seen various errors but never that one! However, this is pointing to a cached file that has apparently become corrupt but the file is still there. Clearing your browser cache will fix that.

I always used to get an IE error when I used the "back" button. I always had to refresh the page. After installing IE8, that error seems to have gone away. I will keep my fingers crossed! :)

CORRECTION - I don't get the error while navigating the site, but after entering a thread from a search, then clicking back to the search results, I still get the error. :?

Patrick. This is an IE "feature" and will do the same thing with any site or page where you enter form data such as a search. It is not unique to NSN.

Greg,
This may not be unique to NSN, but I do not get this message after a search on any of the other sites that I use. This includes Fred Miranda, Adobe and DPreview. I am not sure why but something is different.

Thanks,
Pat

It also depends on the software that the site in question is using. Some software is "smarter" about how to handle the use of the back button, other software isn't. I just checked on the forums at the three sites mentioned and they're all using different software.

This isn't to say that we shouldn't fix the forums here -- in fact one of the tasks that Greg's asked me to look into is to replace the search function entirely to add more useful features. But it's not the highest of priorities. When I get to that task then I'll try to make sure that for IE (and any other "broken" browsers) things work properly. For some value of "properly".

Incidentally, the original problem for this post was (and occasionally still is) due to the Google ads. The fine folk at Google are constantly tweaking their code, including the javascript code that handles the ads. Add in the caching that E.J. referred to and there's the makings of a nice mess.

Sorry have to bring this thread on 'Webpage Error Message' up the top again!

It happens when opening any of the Forum threads in NSN while using IE 8. FireFox doesn't do that!
I'm on Windows XP.

Example:

While visiting http://www.naturescapes.net/phpBB3/view ... 8&t=160315

IE 8 will prompt with the following message ...

Webpage error details

User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152; .NET CLR 3.5.30729)

KK,

This should now be fixed. Not sure what's more annoying: IE being the least standards-compatible browser or Microsoft breaking their own "standards" (and still not fixing some of the more important areas).

Nicholas,

Thanks for looking into this and well done you've indeed fixed the problem!
Hope it's not something you have to adjust in your coding to 'compromise' getting it to work correctly ...

Well out of curiosity I tried it again tonight and get this on the Home Page:

Webpage error details

Toney,

That's a different error (similar cause, though: ultimately Microsoft breaking the rules [or "defining" them, depending on your point-of-view], and then trying to make things nice and no longer working with the hacks that they required developers implement).

I've made a fix, but I don't have access to an IE8 browser at the moment. The fix works in Safari, Firefox and Opera. Please let me know if you're still getting the error on the home page.

Thanks,

Nicholas

Nicholas that took care of the Home Page error but the Forum error is still showing up. And the Temporary files are all cleaned and Cookies deleted. I use FF now 99% of the time and don't get any errors with it.

This was viewing any thread in the Landscape section:

Toney,

This is due to a Flash object and might be out of my reach - it looks like it's due to one of the advertisers and their scripts. Let me see what I can find. One question: do you have Flash disabled or blocked in your IE8?

(The original error was due to a different object that IE couldn't find, and I've put the necessary checks to block that error.)
