Is anybody using fluid heads for smooth video panning? I'm not willing to throw down $1,000 for the gitzo fluid head but maybe the Manfrotto 503. Just curious if or what your using. I'd like to be able to put my 500 on it as well. THX

I'm using this fluid head.

Light weight, inexpensive and easy to maneuver. Fluids heads are the way for video!

I use the Manfrotto 501HDV even with my 500 and I have been pleased!

Juan, have you found that you can pan smoothly enough for video? I'm still not too sure about tracking flying birds with the LCD but I'd like to try =)

Griggs,

It is not perfect, but works well enough for my needs. If I was shooting video with the 500 every day I would get a better & bigger fluid head, but I have found the 501HDV works pretty well and it's not too heavy nor big which is important to me when traveling.

Do you use it with a Arca Swiss type plate?

Yes, I have an RRS quick release plate. When I was using the 5d2 I had to constantly change it's orientation 90 degrees depending on wheter I was shooting with a long lens like the 500 and mounting the camera. But the new camera plaates from RRS for the 7D have a double axis bottom plate so now I am able to keep the clamp at 90 degrees.

Now the solution is not perfect as I have the RRS plate mounted on top of the manfrotto plate, but it still works well.

Hope that helps.

I use a massive Manfrotto 516 for 5D2/7D bird videos, and IMHO its capacity is just enough for my Sigmonster + 2x TC, or 400 2.8 IS + TCs.

The Bogen manfrotto 516 is an excellent head for what you want. Just make sure you have a nice long sliding mount plate because balance is critical.
