One of the fun things about shooting lions is that after they finally wake up from their nap they are going to yawn and yawn... Betsy again allowed me to get in for a tight shot. I was in a land rover and we were very close, I wanted something different, a really really tight shot...or perhaps Dennis would prefer another dental chart... :-) This was in Moremi National Park, Botswana, last December.

Nikon D100, Betsy (Sigma 300-800), 440mm, F5.6 1/250

Cheers,

That's some serious tartar! I'm surprised to see that in a wild animal! Initially I assumed it was a captive lion till I read your text. I'd have thought chewing on the bones of fresh prey would keep those teeth cleaner. Anyway, this is a very sharp image and well made!

He was a single male in a pride of 9. Older single males often face big troubles in defending their women. Plus, he had a young male that was too old to still be in the pride and I assume there were regular umm squabbles, about that as well. Quite some time ago, I posted a pic of the youngster with a closed eye and bloody face.

So you are all correct that this guy is a veteran.
