Today a friend of mine called who is using my old 10D. He wanted to purchase a 55-250 mm EF-S zoom lens, and he said he could not even mount it on the camera. Sure enough, the 10D is not mentioned on the compatibility list. I remembered that i read something about this, but at that time i was already using a 30D, so i did not pay any attention, and frankly speaking, i don't see a logical reason for it. Could someone please clarify this issue to me?

Thanks in advance!

The first EF-s lens mount camera was the 300D - which was basically a stripped down version of the 10D - same imaging chip, but a cheaper body, slower frame rate etc.

At that time the first ef-s lens (the old 18-55) was introduced, followed by the 10-22, 60MM macro and the later models.

Since the 300D came out, all consumer/prosumer Canon DSLR's have been able to take ef-s lenses, but not those predating the 300D, which is why the 10D is incompatible.

*HOWEVER* there was a resource on the net (I can't remember where) which showed how to modify the original 18-55 ef-s lens to fit the 10D. Obviously, such a thing has to be done at your own risk and I dont know if it works with the current generation of ef-s lenses.

I have the writeup somewhere at my home computer. I specifically used it to modify the 10-22 which now works on the 1d3.

the 'mod' is simply removing the rear plate of the lens.

How bad does the APS-C EF-S lens black out in the corners on an APS-H sensor?

Thanks, pretty serious vignetting but not totally unusable.

Isn't there an issue with the mirror size, and possibly contact with the lens on some EF-S lenses?

Yes, hence the 'mod' described above.

Duh, I guess I should have looked at the mod.
